Description and other notes:
One of the factors which make Montara Mountain Hike great is the beautiful backdrop provided by three ridges to its east : Cahill Ridge, Fifield Ridge and Sweeney Ridge. In turn, a hike along these ridges has Montara's lush green eastern slope as its backdrop. Fifield-Cahill Ridgeline is looked after by San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's (SFPUC) Peninsula Watershed. Access to it is very limited, and is strictly governed by SFPUC. Any hike must be accompanied by their trail leaders, and all hikers must stick together, so be fit enough to walk 3 flat miles per hour (which isn't difficult at all) over 4-5 hours. This hike is not suitable for those who find the suggested pace too fast. Hike Route : you will begin at Skyline College and traverse the entire length of Sweeney Ridge Trail, walking past Portola Discovery Site. Next you will enter SFPUC's land, and walk along two ridges : first Fifield, then Cahill Ridge. The views of Montara Mountain's eastern slopes, and of San Andreas Lake, Palarcitos Lake, and Crystal Springs Reservoir are outstanding. The last two miles are a gentle downhill hemmed in between trees on either side. This is a very easy hike, with the middle 10 miles quite flat.
